The parish of Portree, which was known of old as Kiltarlagain, was united during the 16th century with Raasay and for a short time the united session was additionally joined by Snizort and Uig. In 1726 however, the two sessions were once more disjoined by the Court of Teinds and it was also in this year that the parish church was removed from Kiltarlagain to Portree. Ministry of the session of Portree is recorded from 1727, in the person of Hugh MacDonald. In 1934, following the 1929 union of the Church of Scotland and the United Free Church, Portree Parish Church (known in later years as Portree South) was united with the former United Free Church congregation of Portree North. The kirk session sat within the Presbytery of Skye until the restructuring of the Presbyteries in 1976, when it became part of the Presbytery of Lochcarron-Skye. |
