The church of Fordyce, which was rebuilt in 1804, was dedicated to St Talorgan and ministry of the session is recorded from 1563, in the person of William Lawtie. After the reformation the churches of Cullen and of Deskford were attached to the parish of Fordyce and both remained so until 1622 when they were once more disjoined. In 1934, following the union of the Church of Scotland and the united Free Church in 1929, Fordyce old parish church united with the former United Free Church session of Fordyce East. After the union, under the name of Fordyce, the parish church continued in use as the place of worship and the former East church was converted for use as a church hall. In 1972 a further union was formed with the congregation of Portsoy, which had initially been established as a chapel-of-ease within the bounds of Fordyce parish. The kirk session sat within the Presbytery of Fordyce until 1961 when, by Act of Assembly, the Presbytery of Strathbogie and the Presbytery of Fordyce were united together under the name of the Presbytery of Strathbogie and Fordyce. Following the restructuring of the Presbyteries in 1976, it became part of the Presbytery of Buchan. |
