There was a church in Lerwick by 1685, and after 6 March 1701 the parish was disjoined from Tingwall. In 1722 Sound and Gulberwick were disjoined and added to this charge. The charge was in the Presbytery of Lerwick and Synod of Shetland from 1830 up to 1929, and thereafter in the Presbytery of Shetland. After the Union of the Church of Scotland and the United Free Church of Scotland in 1929, the charge became known as Lerwick St Columba's as there were other congregations in Lerwick. On 28 October 1955 it was united with Bressay and St Olaf's and St Ringan's under the name Lerwick and Bressay. |
