There stood in ancient times, on the shores of Loch Ranza on the Island of Arran, a convent of St Bride. In 1651, the Commission for the Plantation of Kirks ordained that, due to the extensive area of the Island of Arran covered by the Parish of Kilmorie, a new kirk should be erected beside Loch Ranza, and mission work duly began within this area of the parish. The present day parish church of Lochranza was later erected in 1795 and the mission work continued here, carried out by a licentiate who acted as assistant to the ministers of Kilmorie and also of Kilbride. The parish of Lochranza was later disjoined from Kilmorie in 1918 and erected as a quoad sacra charge. In 1930, following the union of the Church of Scotland and the United Free Church, Lochranza Parish Church (later termed Lochranza St Brides) united with the former United Free Church congregation of Lochranza East and Pirnmill, under the name of Lochranza and Pirnmill. The united session later established a link with Shiskine in 1977. The kirk session sat within the Presbytery of Kintyre and later of Ardrossan. |
