The old parish church of New Abbey belonged anciently to the Cistercian Abbey of Sweetheart and was located on an island in Loch Kindar. Upon the suppression of this monastery the parish church was transferred from Loch Kindar to the refectory of the Abbey, where it remained until 1731 when a parish church was built against the south wall of the Abbey. This building continued in use as the place of worship until 1877 when a new church was erected a short distance from the village of New Abbey. In 1952 the former United Free Church congregation of Lochend was linked with New Abbey. The kirk session sat within the Presbytery of Dumfries until the restructuring of the Presbyteries in 1976 when it became part of the Presbytery of Dumfries and Kirkcudbright. |
