A church was first erected in Maxwelltown in 1829, this building however was destroyed by fire in 1842 and a new church was consequently erected in the following year. The parish of Maxwelltown Laurieknowe was later disjoined from that of Troqueer and erected, quoad sacra, on the 17th July, 1871. In 1976 Maxwelltown Laurieknowe united with the session of Troqueer under the name of Dumfries, Laurieknowe Troqueer, however Laurieknowe was later dropped from the name in 1991. The kirk session sat within the jurisdiction of the Presbytery of Dumfries, until the restructuring of the Presbyteries in 1976, when it became part of the Presbytery of Dumfries and Kirkcudbright. |
