Edinburgh St David's first originated in 1831 when the Kirk Session of St Cuthbert's bought Gardner's Crescent Chapel and opened it as a chapel-of-ease to serve the parish of St Cuthbert's. In 1836 the chapel was granted quoad sacra status by the General Assembly and named St David's and the Court of Teinds erected the parish of St David's in 1874. A new church for the parish was later built at the foot of Viewforth in 1912 and the parish was extended in the same year. A union later followed in 1973 with Viewforth St Oswald's to form the session of Viewforth (St David's and St Oswald's), and the former St David's buildings were sold and later demolished. The name of the united session, which sits within the Presbytery of Edinburgh, was changed in 1981 to Viewforth. |
