The Kirk Session of Edinburgh St Matthew's first originated on the 11th November 1883, when an iron church was opened for use at Morningside Toll to serve as a mission of Morningside church. It was later decided in 1886 that a new building should be erected to replace the iron church, and in 1888 the foundation stone of the new church was laid by the Lord High Commissioner. This church was later dedicated on the 2nd May 1890 as St Matthew's and St Matthew's Parish was erected in 1909, when it was disjoined from that of Morningside and established as an independent parish, quoad sacra. In 1974 Edinburgh St Matthew's formed a union with South Morningside, under the name of Cluny, and under the ministry of Rev G.A.M. Munro, minister at Cluny. Following the union St Matthew's church was chosen as the place of worship for the united charge. The kirk session sits within the jurisdiction of the Presbytery of Edinburgh. |
