James Weir (1843-1920) was born in Airdrie in 1843, the son of James Weir, farmer, and Jean Bishop. His father died when he was seven and the family moved to Glasgow. At the age of 15 he was employed in the offices of Hamilton & Grandison, consulting engineers. Two years later he entered an apprenticeship with Randolph, Elder & Co in Govan. In 1865 he completed his apprenticeship and went to sea as an engineer. In 1871 with his brother George he established the firm of G & J Weir & Co, consulting engineers. The business had been established in Liverpool but two years later relocated to Glasgow. In 1886 the firm built Holm Foundry, Cathcart, to manufacture its own products. In 1895 it became a private limited company, with James Weir as chairman. George Weir retired to Australia. In 1898 William Douglas Weir (1877-1959), James's son, joined the board. He became managing director in 1902 and in 1910 replaced his father as chairman. In 1917 he was awarded a knighthood and in 1934 became Lord Weir of Eastwood. The business is still in production in Cathcart, specialising in the manufacture of water pumps.
