John Carnegie (or Carnegy), son of David Carnegie of Kinnaird, was created Lord Lour and Eglismaldie by Charles I on 20 Apr 1639 (RMS vol IX) and Earl of Ethie, Lord Lour and Eglismaldie on 1 Nov 1647 (ibid.). In 1666 he exchanged these titles for that of 1st Earl of Northesk. He was born c1579 and was the younger brother of the Earl of Southesk (cr. 1633). He married firstly, Magdalen, daughter of Sir James Halyburton of Pitcur and widow of John Erskine of Dun. In 1652 he married Marjory, 4th daughter of Andrew Maule of Guildie, widow of William Nairn. He inherited the lands of Lour from his brother Robert Carnegie of Dunnichen (d. 1632). He died in 1667 aged 88 and was succeeded by his son, David.
David Carnegie, 2nd Earl of Northesk, commissioner of supply for Forfarshire and commissioner of excise for Perthshire married c1637 Lady Jane Maule, daughter of the 1st Earl of Panmure. He made over the lands of Lour to his heir David the 3rd earl, before his death in 1679. He in turn disponed Lour to his younger brother, Patrick, c. 1688.
Patrick Carnegie of Lour (d. 1723) married (1) in 1682 Marjory, daughter of Sir Patrick Threipland of Fingask and (2) in 1702 Margaret Stewart. He was succeeded by his son, Patrick who was born in 1684 and married Alison, daughter of John Watson of Turin. He died in 1729 and was succeeded by his son, Patrick. He was born in 1720 and married (1) Elizabeth, daughter of John Graham and (2) Margaret Graham, daughter of James Graham. In 1799 he was succeeded by his son, Patrick, who was born in 1757. He married in 1789 Margaret St Clair, daughter of Alexander Bower of Kincaldrum. On his death in 1819, the succession went to his son, Patrick Carnegie later Watson-Carnegy.
Patrick Watson-Carnegy of Lour and Turin was born in 1791. In 1832 he married Rachel Ann Forbes, daughter of James Forbes of Echt. He died 3 September 1838 and was succeeded by his son, Patrick Alexander Carnegy of Lour, JP, DL. He was born 29 March 1836 and died without heirs on 4 June 1914. He was a Captain 15th Hussars, Major and Hon Lt-Col Forfarshire Light Horse. He married 5 January 1865 Elizabeth Diana Davidson (died 5 March 1910), daughter of Duncan Davidson of Tulloch Castle, Ross-shire
The present holder of the title is Elizabeth Patricia Carnegy of Lour who was created Baroness Carnegy in 1988.
