In reign of David II, 1329-1370, Walter Cissor held one half of the lands of Glorat with mill, the other half being held by Gilbert de Insula. Another early ancestor seems to have been John Stirling who was armour bearer to James I and knighted by him in 1430.
The estate before 1449 belonged to the coheiresses of Sir William de Erth of Plane. A Willelmus de Glorate is one of the witnesses to a sasine in 1464. In 1508 the lands were acquired by Sir John Striveling of Cragbernard who had a charter from the superior Mathew, Earl of Lennox. The second son of John and his wife, Margaret Abernethy was William Striveling, 1st of Glorat. He was the son of the Earl of Lennox's cousin. In 1523 he obtained a new infeftment of the lands of Glorat and superiority of the lands of Easter Baldorane belonging to Walter Stewart. His wife was Margaret Houstoun. He seems to have been previously keeper of Dumbarton Castle, possibly as deputy of his father. He was keeper of Dumbarton Castle for 17 years from 1527 and was appointed curator to Mathew, 4th Earl of Lennox in 1531. He was murdered in 1534 by Humphry Galbrath and others in a dispute concerning Dumbarton Castle. He married before 1517 Mariota Brisbane, daughter of Brisbane of Bishopton. His second wife Margaret was a daughter of Houstoun of that Ilk. His first son, George was served heir to his father in 1537. His second son, Andrew was ancestor of the Stirlings of Law and Edinbarnet.
George Stirling, 2nd of Glorat and Baldoran was captain of the Castle of Dunbarton from 1534. In 1544 he withstood a siege by the Earl of Lennox until he entered into agreement with the Regent Arran in 1545. In 1545 he received a commission from the Queen to be captain, constable and keeper of the castle. He married before 1544 Margaret Buchanan, daughter of the laird of Buchanan. They had a son, John who succeeded. George Striveling was killed at Pinkie in 1547. His son, John was infeft as his heir in 1550.
John Striveling, 3rd of Glorat married Annabella, daughter of Sir William Edmonstone of Duntreath. His eldest son, John inherited the title c1613. He seems to have died c1608.
John Stirling, 4th of Glorat married before 1604 Annabell Graham. His son, Mungo succeeded on his father's death c1642.
Sir Mungo Stirling, 5th of Glorat and 1st bt was a Royalist and suffered much during the Cromwellian period. He was captain in Alexander Leslie's army which crossed into England in support of Charles I in 1641. He served again in 1645 under Montrose. He married 3 times (1) 1614 Margaret, daughter of Alexander of Kinglas (2) before 1631 Marion, daughter of Wauchope of Niddries (3) 1641 Margaret Livingstone. He was still alive in 1669 and was succeeded by his eldest son, George.
Sir George Stirling, 6th of Glorat. Created baron of Nova Scotia in 1666. He married in 1657, Mary, daughter of Sir George Seaton of Hailes. She died in 1659 and he married in 1666 Marjory, eldest daughter of Sir William Purves of Woodhouselee. His son, Mungo succeeded after 1693.
Sir Mungo Stirling, 2nd bt and 7th of Glorat married c1705 Barbara widow of John Douglas of Mains. He was living at Glorat in 1706 and in 1712. He died in 1712. he was succeeded by his eldest son, James.
Sir James Stirling, 3rd bt, 8th of Glorat was 6 when he succeeded in 1712. In 1740 he obtained a crown charter of the lands of Glorat. He married (1) 1728 Martha Luke (2) 1751 Jean, daughter of John Stirling of Herbertshire. He had no issue. In 1765 he entailed his estates and died at Glorat in 1771 and was succeeded by his 1st cousin, Alexander, son of his uncle John Stirling, writer to the signet. John Stirling had previously purchased Glorat for his nephew when it was sold in 1720.
Sir Alexander Stirling, 4th bt and 9th of Glorat was mayor of S Albans in 1755. he was born in 1715 and had a crown charter of Glorat in 1771. He succeeded Sir john Home of Renton, his cousin in 1785 and entailed that estate in 1788. He married c1749 Mary, daughter of Robert Willis of Strood. He was succeeded by his eldest son, John.
Sir John Stirling, 5th bt and 10th of Glorat was born in 1750 and served heir to his father in 1791. Before 1771 he married Gloriana, daughter of Samuel Folsome of Stratford in the colony of Connecticut, North America. He was succeeded by his 4th son, Samuel.
Sir Samuel Stirling, 6th bt and 11th of Glorat born in 1783 was called to the Scottish bar in 1808. He married in 1842 Mary Ann, daughter of Major Robert Berry of Unthank, Dunbartonshire. She died in 1856 and he died at Paris in 1858 without issue. He was succeeded by his nephew, Samuel Home.
Sir Samuel Home-Stirling, 7th bt and 12th of Glorat was born in 1830. He succeeded his uncle in 1858 in the estates of Glorat and Renton. He married in 1854, Mary H T Begbie. He died without male issue in 1861.
Sir Charles Elphinestone Fleming Stirling, 8th bt and 13th of Glorat was the youngest son of Captain George Stirling. He was born in 1831 and emigrated to Australia in 1850 returning to Scotland in 1863. He joined the Stirlingshire militia and retired with the rank of captain in 1868. He married in 1867, Ann Georgina daughter of James Murray of Ancoats Hall, Manchester. He rebuilt the mansion house of Glorat in the Scottish baronial style.
He was succeeded by his son, Sir George Murray Home Stirling, 9th bt and 14th of Glorat who had a distinguished army career and was keeper of Dumbarton Castle in 1927. he was born in 1869 and married in 1904 Mary Elizabeth. He was a brigadier in the Royal Company of Archers. He died in 1949. In 1969 Burke's Peerage described the title as dormant.
