The Callander family trace their descent from John Callander, 1st of Westertown in Stirlingshire, who had a charter of these lands in 1608. He was succeeded by his son, Alexander Callander, 2nd of Westertown who was served heir in 1611.
His son Alexander Callander, 3rd of Westertown was succeeded by his son, John Callendar, 4th of Westertown, who was served heir in 1686. His son, Alexander Callander, 5th of Westertown was served heir in 1732. He died in 1742 and was succeeded by his son, Sir John Callander.
Sir John Callander (1739-1812) served as an MP for the Borough of Berwick-upon-Tweed, 1795-1802 and 1806-7, after a career in the army. He succeeded to Westerton in 1742 and to Prestonhall after the death of his brother Alexander. He was created a baronet on 1 August 1798, a title which became extinct on his death. Alexander Callander (1741-1792) of Crichton, made his fortune working for the East India Company in Bombay. On his return to Scotland he purchased a number of properties, including Prestonhall from Lord Adam Gordon. He served as an MP for the Aberdeen Burghs from 1790-1792, the year of his death. Sir John, Alexander and their younger brother David (1742-98), student and friend of Adam Smith, all died without issue. On Sir John's death the estates passed to a nephew, John Alexander Higgins (1765-1822) of Neuck who assumed the name of Callander.
On his death he was succeeded by his nephew, William (1792-1854), 8th of Westertown and 4th of Prestonhall who adopted the surname Burn-Callander. He was succeeded by his son, John Alexander Burn-Callander (1839-65), who was succeeded by his son Henry Burn-Callander (1862-1928). His son succeeded him as William Henry Burn-Callander (1890-1967), 11th of Westertown and 7th of Prestonhall. He was succeeded by his son, John David Burn-Callander, (1917-88) 8th of Prestonhall who seems to have dropped the Westertown title.
The present holder of the title is Major (John) Henry Burn Callander, 9th of Prestonhall. The family have reverted to the surname Callander.
Prestonhall is in Cranston Parish in Midlothian. It belonged originally to Sir Roderick MacKenzie but was encumbered by debt. It was purchased at a judicial sale in 1738 by Henrietta, duchess of Gordon and wife of Alexander, 3rd Duke of Gordon. She commissioned the architect William Adam to repair the dilapidated house and expand it. Her son, Lord Adam Gordon, sold the property to Alexander Callander in 1789.
