Key to Catalogue
Basically, the papers are catalogued according to member of the Bruce Family, e.g. all papers relating to Thomas, 7th Earl of Kincardine, are listed under his catalogue number, subdivided into their respective categories - papers relating to their wives or children will also appear unless the number is such or unless they are spread over such a period of time involving their families that they merit a separate catalogue number, e.g., Whytes of Kirkcaldy. In some cases, e.g. the estate of Dairsie, Dunfermline Abbey or some connected families, there are significant papers to make it convenient to catalogue each as a group over the whole period. Except where there are these separate groups which are not subdivided, the papers have been subdivided as follows:-
1. Personal Accounts 2. Bonds, Legal Processes, General payments. 3. letters and essays not included in other sections. 4. Estate papers - charters, sasines, returns, Factors' reports and instructions. 5. Public Accounts, military, Commissary, elections, etc. 6. House (Broomhall and others) maintenance building, furniture, etc. 7. Family and personal papers, e.g., marriage contracts, testaments, funerals, etc.
