Including:
1817 March 24 Letter from Roger Aytoun, WS, Edinburgh, negotiations with sundry landowners as to creation of votes in Lanarkshire.
1817 March 24 Letter from Rundell, Bridge and Rundell, jewellers, Ludgate Hill, asking for payment towards interest on the Marquis of Douglas's account.
1817 March 24 Letter from Robert Rutherford, WS, Edinburgh, as to titles of Mr Waddell of Eister Moffat, where there is a mid-superiority to Lord Belhaven.
1817 March 25 Letter from [Reginald George Macdonald of] Clanranald, 7 John Street, asking Brown to give advice on part of Appin Estate called KinlochBeg which was wanted by one his friends for sporting purposes.
1817 March 25 Letter from Alexander Young, WS, Edinburgh, dismissal of Excise Officers from Arran. Does not hold out much hopes as to Mochrum Superiorities because they are dealing with a lawyer who is "dilatory and shuffling". Had thought of giving Mr Spalding "his instant dismission from my employment" but, by advice of Messrs Aytoun and Rutherford, he is being "the chance of retrieving his errors".
1817 March 25 Letter from Alexander Young, WS, Edinburgh, complaining at great length as to allegations being made in Glasgow that he is being remiss in transactions as to creation of Lanarkshire votes and with Memorandum as to proposed purchase from heirs of Sir George Dunbar of Mochrum of mid-superiority of lands in parish of Glassford held from Lady Montgomerie.
1817 March 26 Letter from James Davidson, Lamlash, as to negotiations as to stocking and implements etc on farm of Shedog with Trustees for William Stevens' creditors. "In your favour of the 5th Instant you ment that the Smuggling will soon be put a stop to. I am of a different opinion, unless the Marquis resorts to the most determined measures possible. The Tenants are more resolute than ever. I am just now told that yesterday some Hundreds of them assembled to deforce the crew of Sir John Reid's Cutter. The crew fired on them and wounded six or seven and carried of[f] the whisky. William McKinnon in Toryline and his son were shot through the body and not expected to live. I have not h[e]ard who the others are. This country like many others are at present showing strong symptoms of Rebellion, though apparently a different cause, may ultimately tend to disturb the security of the Country as much as any other."
1817 March 26 Letter from Alexander Young, WS, as to negotiations with Mr Lockhart as to vote over Tweediehalls and as to providing him with site for a bridge and lodge.
1817 March 26 Letter from Hugh Mosman of Auchtyfardle and John McKirdy, as to payment of £51:6:8d from Hamilton Estate towards building of a schoolhouse.
1817 March 27 Letter from Robert Rutherford, WS, Edinburgh, as to expectation that transaction as to Mochrum's Superiorities can be satisfactorily carried through.
1817 March 27 Letter from James Craig, Dalserf Mains, asking for payment to be made to [William] Aiton for legal expenses.
1817 March 26 Letter from Laurence Hill, writer, Glasgow, as to having letter sent from Lord Archibald Hamilton to General Peter.
1817 March 28 Letter from Alexander Young, WS, Edinburgh, as to objections which had been raised by Lord Archibald Hamilton to terms of Conveyance to Robert Carrick, but which had not been drawn up by Young.
1817 March 28 Letter from Sir H Stewart, Allanton House, as to drawing up Report on mode of striking the fiars.
1817 March 28 Letter from John Lamb, writer, Lanark, as to meeting there of subscribers to proposed Clydesdale line of road. McQuiston is revising his former estimates for making the road.
1817 March 28 Letter from Robert Brown to [Reginald George] Macdonald of Clanranald, giving advice as to Kinlochbeg, Appin, which was purchased by Sir William Cunningham from Marquis of Tweedale at £12,500 but resumed because price had not been paid.
1817 March 29 Letter from Alexander Young, WS, Edinburgh, discussing at length negotiations with Mr Lochkhart concerning bridge, porter-lodge, excambion and votes.
1817 March 31 Letter from Alexander Young, Edinburgh, account of encounter between Revenue cutter and inhabitants in Arran over illicit distilling. Work of Sir William Hamilton and John Clerk on appeal case against Mrs Scott Waring. Intention to charge Admiral [Sir Alexander Forrester Inglis] Cochrane with horning on amount of his debt to Lady Bath's Executors and bets being taken on the outcome of the election.
1817 March 31 Letter from James McBride, Arran Castle, as to hedger having been sent there and need to sell or kiln dry 40 bolls of bear.
1817 March 31 Letter from John Macdonald of Borrodale, Edinburgh, as to having named Brown as one of the guardians for his children and settlement of affairs of late Glenaladale.
