Description

Including:
1815 June 1 Letter from Alexander Young, WS, Edinburgh, now finds that John Clerk will still be present at hearing of action with Mrs Esten or Scott Waring. Thinks the Inner House will confirm the decision of the Lord Ordinary and that John Clerk should take an appeal with him to the House of Lords when he goes up to London. Representation for Trustees of late Duke of Hamilton as to teinds of Coats has been refused in action before Lord Pitmilly, on answers by Mr Fullarton, so that [Hugh] Warrender should be examined judicially as to papers he holds. Expects the Duke's Trustees will appeal to the whole Court. In action at instance of Mr Colebrook as to augmented stipend of Crawfordjohn, before Lord Alloway, under obligation granted by Duchess Anne, it has been found heir of line is bound to relieve heir of entail. Had expected case as to Kinglass to have been heard before Lord Craigie, but it has not yet come on. "Mr Robert Hamilton has pledged himself to his Constituents for success in this case, and I trust he will redeem his pledge by furnishing an additional proof of his being a very poor Lawyer."
1815 June 2 Letter from Charles Stirling, Glasgow, with copy letter of 26 May to Marquis of Douglas and Clydesdale as to hogshead of sherry sent by Admiral Fleming.
1815 June 2 Letter from Robert Rutherford, WS, Edinburgh, difficulties being caused by Messrs Wardlaw and Nasmyth over payment of teinds. If they are forced to do diligence they will have to extract decree but then they will try to throw the expense on the objectors.
1815 June 2 Letter from William McKinnon, Slidery, Isle of Arran, complaining of fellow-tenants.
1815 June 6 Draft letter from Robert Brown, Edinburgh, to James Chapman, land surveyor, as to plans of Lewis. "It occurrs to me that in addition to the General Plan of Lewis and book of contents it is requisite that you make separate plans of each farm within the head dyke (or you may in some instances where they are small enough put two or more of them on one sheet of paper) on a scale of 8 chains to an inch. You will mark the contents of each field or division on the plans in order that the whole may be bound into separate Atlases for each parish. Whenever this is done, I shall be glad to see the whole and then I have no doubt of being able to report on your engagement as being compleated in a satisfactory manner. Your early attention to what I have pointed out will be obliging."
1815 June 7 Letter from G Cunningham, Edinburgh, as to giving up lease of Drafan.
1815 June 8 Letter from John Douglas, Corrie, suggesting compensation at 14d per ton for 3,000 tons limestone he had quarried but not manufactured in tenancy of Arran lime quarry.
1815 June 9 Letter from James Hill, Glasgow, as to Barrowstouness Canal and Mr Whitworth's Report, which is made on assumption Forth and Clyde Navigation will be 8 foot deep. Proposals to deepen Forth and Clyde canal to 9 or 10 feet, and difficulties this would cause for the Barrowstouness Canal. Success of the Canal would partly depend on whether the harbour at the Barrowstouness would remain superior to that at Grangemouth, where Lord Dundas has planned vastly expensive schemes.
1815 June 10 Letter from Roger Aytoun, WS, Edinburgh, as to lease of Draffan to Messrs George and Andrew Cunningham, mismanagement of the farm, and their power of forcing penalty of L.3 per acre mismanaged.
1815 June 13 Letter from James Galt, Benecaregan, as to difficulties in building operations through want of lime, with difficulties which had occurred as to unloading two cargoes.
1815 June 13 Letter from James Davidson, Lamlash, masons wanted to build houses for tenants.
1815 June 13 Letter from Hector Macdonald Buchanan, PCS, as to lease by Clanranald's Trustees to Dr MacCaskill of Killonan.
1815 June 14 Letter from Archibald McNicol, Moniguil, finds tenants on West of Arran generally averse to making kelp this season as they are working on building houses, and he does not think they should be driven into kelp manufacture.
1815 June 14 Letter from James MacBride, Arran Castle, as to kelp sold to tenants for manure.
1815 June 14 Letter from Robert Rutherford, WS, Edinburgh, asking for advice as to disposition of 9 December 1809 by Lieutenant General John Hamilton of Bothwellhaugh etc. Does not know whether property, or only superiority, of some of the lands was involved.
1815 June 14 Letter from Sutherland Mackenzie, Leith Mount, as to proposed visit to Hamilton.
1815 June 15 Letter from Robert Anderson, Edinburgh, Royal Bank of Scotland stock is standing high on hope they will declare a bonus, but the interest they actually pay is low.
