In 1908 the British Trust was established by the Scottish born philanthropist Andrew Carnegie. Its objectives are: to recognise civilian heroism in attempting to save human life in the United Kingdom, Eire, the Channel Islands, or in the surrounding territorial waters, by providing financial assistance where the heroic act has brought misfortune to the rescuer or the rescuer's family.
It is still in existence based in Dunfermline and is a registered Scottish charity No. SCO00729 and was incorporated by Royal Charter in 1919.
