Description

The main group consists of a series of bound volumes of correspondence. There are 17 volumes, most of which contain letters addressed to, and draft replies by, Sir John Sinclair of Ulbster covering the period c. 1778-1835. Some volumes contain correspondence addressed to Sir George Sinclair, his son. Most of the letters are arranged in order of correspondents and some volumes are titled accordingly, e.g., 'Bishops, barons, baronets and knights'. These volumes were used by Rosalind Mitchison, 'Agricultural Sir John' (1962); see p. 279. The letters cover agricultural, political, literary and many other topics. Correspondents include - Sir Francis Burdett, M.P., Joseph Hume, M.P., Thomas Attwood, M.P., Hon. William Maule, M.P., Sir Brooke Boothby, Sir William Hamilton, Adam Smith, George Chalmers, Arthur Young, William Wilberforce, Francis Jeffrey, Lord Advocate, George Canning, George Dempster of Dunnichen, Duke of Clarence (later King William IV), Lord Glenbervie, Lord Beauchamp, Lord Sheffield, Viscount Melville, Ilay Campbell (Lord Succoth), Sir Walter Scott (on the Ossian controversy), Sir John Macpherson, Sir John Parnell. There are also 3 bound volumes of letters of Sir George Sinclair, an inventory of household furnishings, 1788, and a few 19th century estate papers. There are estate letter books from about 1860. There are no estate plans earlier than about 1900.
