Admin History The archive was first surveyed by Sir William Fraser for the Historical Manuscripts Commission in the 1870s and his reports provide a very useful overview of the historical context of the archive and the earliest records within it (Historical Manuscripts Commission 4th Report (1874), pages 470-492; Historical Manuscripts Commission 6th Report (1876), pages 606-634).

The Argyll Papers were surveyed by the National Register of Archives of Scotland in the 1960s (NRAS 6) and again in the 1980s (NRAS 1209). NRAS 1209 partly replaces NRAS 6, but not entirely: researchers must, therefore, consult both surveys in order to obtain a full overview of the archive.

In addition, all of the maps and plans listed in NRAS 6 (pages 159-164 and 276-291) were re-listed by the Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Scotland (RCAHMS, now Historic Environment Scotland). The separate RCAHMS' Maps and Plans List should now be used for finding these records.

Please read this introductory note carefully before consulting the surveys, as it explains which parts of NRAS 6 are still current, which have been re-listed in NRAS 1209 and which have been replaced by other lists.
N.B. A closure period of 75 years has been applied to records in the archive.

NRAS6 is not yet available on the electronic catalogue.
The following pages of NRAS 6 are semi-current:
Some items have been re-listed in NRAS 1209, but not all. The notes below summarise these changes and guide you to the appropriate sections of NRAS 1209. N.B. The re-listing process appears to have been undertaken piece-meal and the mapping is not always straightforward - bundle numbers mapped with confidence are listed first, and those mapped with less confidence are given in square brackets. See respective pages in NRAS 6 for details.
NRAS 6 pages 121-126 (black deed boxes 1-8) have been partially re-listed as NRAS 1209 bundles 125, 126, 800, 805-810, 1751-1775, 1813-1835,1838-1846, 1851, 1872-1919 [and probably also 197, 204, 208, 389-393, 717, 761, 1779-1788, 1868]

NRAS 6 page 254 (Argyll MSS on loan to Miss Mary Cosh). Some items may have been re-listed as NRAS 1209 bundles [155, 156, 752], but most of this section of NRAS 6 remains current.

Creator Name Campbells, Dukes of Argyll
Publication Note The archive was heavily used by Ian G. Lindsay and Mary Cosh to inform their history of 'Inveraray and the Dukes of Argyll' (Edinburgh University Press, 1973). This publication remains the standard work on the history of the Dukes of Argyll and the development of the new castle and town of Inveraray, covering the period from 1746 until the mid-twentieth century. The archives were also used by Alastair Campbell for his three volume 'History of the Clan Campbell' (Edinburgh, 2000-2004).
