The Elliot-Murray-Kynynmound family, earls of Minto, are descended from Sir Gilbert Elliot (d 1718), 1st baronet of Headshaw and afterwards of Minto. He was created baronet of Scotland in 1700 and was member of parliament for Roxburgh, 1702-1707, and Lord of Session as Lord Minto in 1705. His great grandson, Sir Gilbert Elliot (1751-1814), was viceroy of Corsica and created Baron Minto upon his return in 1797. He changed his name to Elliot-Murray-Kynynmound by royal licence in 1797. He was Envoy Extraordinary to Vienna in 1779, President of the Board of Control in 1806 and Governor-General of Bengal. On 24 February 1813 he was created 1st Earl of Minto. He died in 1814 and was succeeded by his eldest son. Gilbert (1782-1859), 2nd earl of Minto, was Ambassador to Berlin, 1832-1834, 1st Lord of the Admiralty, 1835-1841, Lord Privy Seal, 1846-1852, and died in 1859. William Hugh Elliot-Murray-Kynynmound (1814-1891), was the eldest son of the 2nd earl and succeeded as 3rd earl of Minto in 1859. Gilbert John (1845-1914), 4th earl of Minto was Governor-General of Canada, 1898-1904 and Viceroy of India, 1905-1910. He died in 1914 and was succeeded by his eldest son. Sir Victor Gilbert Lariston Garnet (1891-1975), 5th earl of Minto, was succeeded by his eldest son, Sir Gilbert Edward George Lariston (b 1928), as 6th earl of Minto in 1975. He was aide-de-camp to the Governor of Cyprus, Lieutenant in the Queen's Bodyguard for Scotland and member of the Royal Company of Archers in 1955. He was deputy Traffic Commissioner for Scotland 1975-1981 and President of Chamber of Commerce in Scotland, 1980-1982.
