John Boyd Orr was born in Kilmaurs, Ayrshire, the son of R C Orr of Holland Green, Kilmaurs. He was educated at Glasgow University and was internationally honoured by many academic institutions. He served in the 1914-1918 war and was awarded the MC and DSO. Orr was Professor of Agriculture at Aberdeen University, 1942-1945; MP (Ind) Scottish Universities, 1945-1946; Dir-Gen United Nations Food and Agricultural Organisation, 1945-1948. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, 1949 and made Comdr Legion d'Honner and Comdr and Cross with Star, Polonia Restituta. Orr wrote several papers on physiological subjects in scientific journals and various publications, including: 'History of Scotch Church Crisis of 1904'; 'Food Health and Income', 1936; 'Feast and Famine', 1960. He married Elizabeth Pearson in 1915 and they had two daughters and a son who was killed in action. The title became extinct upon Lord Boyd Orr's death in 1971.
