The Aberdeen Association for the Improvement of the Dwellings of the Labouring Classes Ltd was incorporated as a limited company in 1862 with a number of shareholders to supply the capital: among them were local gentlemen and clergy, and the firm of Murray and Garden. The objects of the Association were: 'For the building, or purchasing of houses in or near Aberdeen suitable for dwellings for the labouring classes, to be improved, and let, or sold by the Association'. Working in co-operation with Poor Law officials, they purchased property in some of the poorer streets of Aberdeen, improved and maintained it, and managed it as inexpensive homes for labourers and their families. They held property in Loch Street, Hutcheon Street and the Gilcomston district. The Association was voluntarily wound up in 1930.
