The earliest records of Burnside estate, Perthshire indicate that, at least from 1621, the property of Nethir Muirton was in the hands of Patrick Ogilvy, the youngest son of Lord Ogilvy of Airlie, and his wife, Isobell Murray. Only six years later it had passed to their son, Captain George Ogilvy of Muirtoune. By 1653 the owner was a James Ogilvy and by 1724 it was passed to his grandson, David Ogilvy of Cluny, having first passed to his second son, John Ogilvy and his wife Alison, and then to his first son, James, David's father. In 1737, David Ogilvy of Cluny, was the heir of his grand-uncle Colonel George Ogilvy of Muirtown. The property passed into the family of John Haliburton of Muirton in 1796, and from him to trustees of the daughters of Dr Thomas Gibson, 1800. The property, which by 1811 had been renamed Burnside, then passed into the control of the Crichton family, and in 1821 the trustees and widow, Isabella Steele or Crichton, of Thomas Crichton, sold the property to a James Steele of Dundee.
