Ravenspark Hospital, Irvine, Ayrshire, was originally Cuninghame Combination Poorhouse, which was erected in 1857. The constituent parishes of the combination were Kilwinning, Irvine, Dreghorn, Dalry, Kilbirnie, Beith, West Kilbride, Stevenston, Stewarton, Dundonald and Symington. In 1858 the poorhouse governor obtained permission to provide separate accommodation for ten male and ten female ?pauper imbeciles and idiots'. This developed into an asylum building adjoining the poorhouse. The poorhouse and asylum transferred to Ayrshire County Council in 1930 and to the National Health Service in 1948 (Local Government (Scotland) Act 1929, 19 & 20 Geo. V, c.25; National Health Service (Scotland) Act 1947, 10 & 11 Geo. VI, c.27). From 1948 until the reorganisation of the Health Service in 1974, the hospital was managed by the Board of Management for Northern Ayrshire Hospitals. During this period the name was changed to Ravenspark (1958) and substantial additions and alterations were made. In 1974 it passed to the control of the North Ayrshire and Arran District of Ayrshire and Arran Health Board. It continues in use, mainly for geriatric and psycho-geriatric patients.Note. The spellings Cunninghame, Cuningham, Cunningham and Cuninghame have all been found in the minutes of the poorhouse, but by 1900 Cuninghame had become the preferred version.
