Born near Aquileia in Italy around 345 AD, Rufinus was educated at Rome where he met and befriended Jerome (c 347-420, later St. Jerome). When Rufinus returned to Aquileia to enter a monastery, Jerome continued to be his frequent visitor. However, they later quarrelled over their study of Origen, a scholar who was denounced by the church as a heretic: Jerome was happy to renounce Origen?s teachings but Rufinus refused to do so. From that point, around 393 AD, Rufinus courted condemnation for his interest in Origen, and continued to cause affront to Jerome by associating him in public with Origen. Rufinus? own work included translations and commentaries on other Greek Christian texts and a commentary on the Apostles? Creed. He died in Sicily around 410 AD.
