Mott Macdonald Group Ltd is an international company founded in 1989 specialising in civil engineering projects. In 2002 it had around 150 offices in over 100 countries across the world. Operating through its main trading company Mott MacDonald Ltd and its many subsidiaries, the firm is active in a wide range of areas including building and construction, communications, urban regeneration, consultancy, management services and education. The firm's origins can be traced to several key individuals. In 1921 Sir Murdoch MacDonald (1866-1957) founded the engineering firm Sir M. MacDonald and Partners. A native of Inverness, MacDonald worked on railway extension schemes in the Highlands and was assistant engineer on the construction of the Aswan Dam where he earned a reputation as an expert in irrigation and flood control schemes. The firm came to specialise in resources and development planning and undertook projects such as flood control, reclamation, harbour and estuary works, hydro-electric power, sewerage, and road and railway bridges. The firm had an office in Perth for a time.Sir Basil Mott (1859-1938) was resident engineer for the world?s first electric tube line, the City and South London Railway, which opened in 1890. In 1896 he entered into partnership with Sir Benjamin Baker (1840-1907). After Baker's death in 1907, Mott carried on his own practice as consulting engineer with his partners David Hay, David Anderson, and later G. L. Groves. As well as a continuing involvement with the construction and improvement of the London underground, Mott and his company were involved in many important bridge schemes. In 1989 Mott, Hay and Anderson merged with Sir M. MacDonald and Partners and formed the Mott MacDonald Group Ltd. The Perth office of Sir M MacDonald and Partners was amalgamated with the Inverness Office and the records transferred to the Highland Council Archive and Perth and Kinross Council Archive as appropriate.
