An Comunn GĂ idhealach is a voluntary society, with charitable status, founded in Oban in 1891 with the aim of reviving and fostering interest in the Gaelic language. An Comunn, or the Association, promotes the use of the language in everyday life and encourages teaching and learning. It also supports the study and cultivation of Gaelic literature, history, music and art. One of the original aims was to found a Gaelic Festival and the Mod (since 1999 The Royal National Mod) takes place annually.
The Wick branch of the Association was founded in 1925 and meetings were held quarterly at the Carnegie Public Library and occasionally at the Pulteneytown Academy, Wick. A variety of social and educational activities were organised including lectures, concerts, reading circles, story telling and ceilidhs. Although the branch was wound up in 1953 due to poor attendance it was later reformed and was still in existence in 2002.
