When the Local Government (Scotland) Act 1973 abolished burghs, counties and district councils, their records for the counties and burghs of Stirling, Clackmannan and part of Perthshire passed to the newly-created Central Region Archives Department in 1975, where they came under specialist archival control. After the Local Government (Scotland) Act 1995 introduced a system of unitary authorities responsibility for these records was vested in Clackmannanshire Council. The transfer of the records from the former Central Region repository (now occupied by Stirling Council Archives) to Clackmannanshire Council's archive store in Alloa took place in May 1997.
