Description
|
The churchwardens of the parish of St Cuthbert's, otherwise known as the West Kirk, petitioned Edinburgh Town Council in 1759 to erect a charity workhouse to take care of the poor of the parish. The council contributed £31.10 towards the project on 24 January 1759 (ref: SL1/1/75). This did not prove to be enough money to complete the building, so an additional 31 pounds and 10 shillings was granted by the town council on 5 November 1760 (ref: SL1/1/76). A stone recovered from the entrance to the workhouse bore the date 1759, which corresponds to the date when the workhouse was founded. The charity workhouse was situated in St Cuthbert's Lane, the site of which was later covered by the Caledonian Railway. This has now become the Caledonian Hotel. The West Kirk Charity Workhouse became known as St Cuthbert's in November 1844.
