History
|
Kintore is in Aberdeenshire. The first Earl of Kintore was Sir John Keith (d 1714) who was the youngest son of William, 6th Earl Marischal (d 1635). He was created Earl of Kintore in 1677 in recognition of his part in the preservation of the regalia of Scotland: to save them from the hands of Cromwell he had them removed from Dunnottar Castle, near Stonehaven, Aberdeenshire, and hidden in the nearby church of Kinneff. William, 4th Earl of Kintore, died unmarried in 1761: the estate passed to George Keith, 10th Earl Marischal, and on his death in 1778 the peerage passed to his cousin Anthony Adrian Falconer (d 1804), 8th Baron Falconer, who became 5th Earl of Kintore.
