History
|
John MacRobin was born in Edinburgh in 1804 and graduated MD from Edinburgh University in 1827. He began his career as the clinical clerk to Dr Alison (1790 ? 1859) and then worked with him in dispensary practice.
In 1830, he moved to Aberdeen to take up the post of resident physician to the Royal Lunatic Asylum. He was subsequently appointed visiting physician and then consultant physician, a position he held until his death. He also maintained a practice within the city.
In 1832, he was appointed as assistant to Dr Charles Skene, then professor of medicine at Marischal College, and succeeded to the professorship upon his death in 1839. Following the merger of Marischal and King's Colleges in 1860, he was elected dean of the medical faculty on three successive occasions, holding the position for a total of 15 years. He also represented the Universities of Aberdeen and Edinburgh on the General Medical Council. His only publication of note was 'An Introduction to the Study of Practical Medicine' published in 1835: unfortunately only the first part of this work made it into print.
He retired from his university position in 1875 and to honour the occasion, friends and students arranged for him to have his portrait painted by fellow townsman, George Reid, RSA.
He died in 1879.
