Letter from George Gilbert Scott, London, to Hugh F. Leslie, Powis, on the restoration of St. Machar's Cathedral. He expresses dismay on learning of the proposed destruction of the 'very remarkable timber roof' of St. Machar Cathedral and is surprised that advice he had given had been disregarded, although he was not directly consulted by the heritors. He had not wished to annoy the architect concerned, his friend Mr. Matthews, who had called him in as a consultant and had expected his cooperation and support. He considers the roof unique and capable of successful repair and protests vigourously against its destruction: his assistant Mr. Burlisu had recently visited Aberdeen and confirmed views expressed in report. Comments that it is still not too late to save the roof although this would be at an increased cost.

Scott had been consulted regarding the state of St. Machar's Cathedral, Old Aberdeen, some time previously. Hugh F. Leslie of Powis was one of the heritors of the parish of Old Machar in which the cathedral stands and one of the members of the original committee set up to obtain subscriptions towards the restoration of the cathedral in 1866.
