Ayr Sheriff Court operates within the Sheriffdom of South Strathclyde, Dumfries and Galloway which also comprises the courts situated at Airdrie, Dumfries, Hamilton, Kirkcudbright, Lanark and Stranraer.
As of The Sheriff Court Districts (Alteration of Boundaries) Order 1996, Ayr Sheriff Court District covers South Ayrshire and wards 21-30 in the area of East Ayrshire.
The sheriffdom of Ayr was in existence from about 1200. The sheriff court at Ayr originally dealt with the whole of that county. In 1846 a separate court was established at Kilmarnock (SC7), which did not initially exercise commissary functions. The parishes within the ordinary jurisdiction of the Ayr court were Auchinleck, Ayr and Alloway, Ballanatrae, Barr, Colmonell, Coylton, Dailly, Dalmellington, Dalrymple, Dundonald, Girvan, Irvine, Kilwinning, Kirkmichael, Kirkoswald, Maybole, Monkton and Prestwick, Muirkirk, New Cumnock, Newton on Ayr, Ochiltree, Old Cumnock, St Quinox, Sorn, Stair, Straiton, Symington and Tarbolton.
