Stonehaven Sheriff Court operated within the Sheriffdom of Grampian, Highlands and Islands, which also comprises the courts situated at Aberdeen, Banff, Dingwall, Dornoch, Elgin, Fort William, Inverness, Kirkwall, Lerwick, Lochmaddy, Peterhead, Portree, Stornoway, Tain and Wick.
As of The Sheriff Court Districts (Alteration of Boundaries) Order 1996, Stonehaven Sheriff Court District covers wards 35-47 in the area of Aberdeenshire.
Under the Sheriffs Act, 1870 [33-34 Vict c86], which came into force on 9 Aug 1870; (1) 'The county of Kincardine, the [office of sheriff whereof is now vacant] shall be and is hereby united with the county of Aberdeen into one sheriffdom, to be called the sheriffdom of Aberdeen and Kincardine'.
(2) 'Whenever a vacancy shall occur in the office of sheriff of Banff, Elgin and Nairn, the said counties shall be disunited and the county of Banff shall be united with the counties of Aberdeen and Kincardine into one sheriffdom to be called the sheriffdom of Aberdeen, Kincardine and Banff'.
