Description The Lieutenancy was established by Royal warrant in 1794 to encourage the development of local volunteer forces. It was the duty of the Lords Lieutenant and their deputies to provide protection for their areas against uprising or invasion. Under the Militia Acts of 1797 and 1802 (37 Geo.III C.103 and 42 Geo.III c.91) Lords Lieutenant were responsible for raising local militia and since the sheriff clerk usually acted as clerk to the lieutenancy, sheriff court records frequently contain militia papers.
