This series commences with the formal records of the proceedings of the sheriff and justice court of Shetland held under the authority of Patrick Stewart, Earl of Orkney. After his power was broken in 1610, judicial authority was vested in James Law, Bishop of Orkney. Under a settlement with the crown in 1614 his bishopric was constituted as a sheriffdom separate from the sheriffdom of the rest of Orkney and Shetland. |
