1. 'The Gow MS', 1872-3, consisting of correspondence, with postscripts, of John Smith (b.1811, son of John Smith or Gow, in Easter Gaulrig, Strathavon, Banffshire), and containing a narrative of how he transported the body of his brother Donald from Edinburgh to Tomintoul, through heavy snow in February 1840, for burial. The coffin was taken some of the way by horse and cart, and carried upon handspakes with the help of `stalwart Highlanders' over the Cairnwell north of Spittal of Glenshee and from Invercauld onwards by way of the Bealach Dearg. 2. The MS, which has an introduction by Judge J R Macgregor, also includes Smith's reminiscences about his family and the Braes of Strathavon, a list, compiled from memory by Smith, of inhabitants of the Braes during his youth, genealogical particulars of the MacGregors there, and thoughts about St Paul. |
