Title Letter from Henry Dundas, Lord Advocate, Edinburgh, to [Alexander Wedderburn] with regard to recipient's situation and giving advice
Dates 19 Jun 1778

Description 'Upon my return to Scotland, ... I met with Adam Smith, and stated to him what I believed was then to be your situation, a Chief Justice and a Peer... We both agreed in wishing that in place of accepting that situation which we then conceived you on the eve of possessing, you had succeeded in your natural course to the Attorney Generalship, and after possessing for some short time longer your unrivalled place in the House of Commons, to pass forward to the Seals or the King's Bench with a Peerage ... I am no partial advocate for Lord N[orth] and have no attachment to him, for he has none to me, but I must do him the justice to say that insincerity is none of his faults. He may be cold and awkward even when he means to be friendly, but these faults are not the objects of resentment.'
