Including: 1-6. 1918 January. Nijf, Kufa Frank Balfour to Lady Frances Balfour, his mother. Visit from Miss [Gertrude] Bell; difficulty over punishment of Nejef, the holy city, which fired on a squadron of cavalry; Frank's advice not taken and he is waiting to see if his resignation is accepted.
7-18. 1918 July 28. Luly [Louis] Palmer, ADC, to Lady Selbourne. Long description of a visit to site of German excavations of ancient city of Babylon; the excavator fled leaving his trophies behind (like the Hunting of the Snark) but unsportingly removed the catalogue, which will give more work to the British Museum staff; writer feels like Herodatus.
19-27, 32-5. 1918 march april. GHQ Neville Lytton to his wife. German attack on the Western Front, the Somme.
28-31. 1918 april hon. Eddy Lascelles to Joan Balfour, his wife.
36-41. 1918 april 24. The Hangings, Ferry Hinksey near Oxford Sir Walter Raleigh to Lady Betty Balfour. Quotes a letter from Valentine to his mother, referring to shattering exploits of JL Myres, a classical scholar, and his Greek brigands.
42-5. 1918 april 20 Luly [Louis] Palmer, ADC, not addressed. Written from Mesopotamia with stories of Frank Balfour and Edward Tennant. |
