Visit from Miss [Gertrude] Bell; difficulty over punishment of Nejef, the holy city, which fired on a squadron of cavalry; Frank's advice not taken and he is waiting to see if his resignation is accepted.

7-18. 1918 July 28.
Luly [Louis] Palmer, ADC, to Lady Selbourne.
Long description of a visit to site of German excavations of ancient city of Babylon; the excavator fled leaving his trophies behind (like the Hunting of the Snark) but unsportingly removed the catalogue, which will give more work to the British Museum staff; writer feels like Herodatus.
