Description |
The documents deal with the administration of the estate of Ladykirk, Berwickshire, and with building work at Ladykirk House and manse. A few items relate to the estates of Lees, also in Berwickshire, and to Pallinsburn in Northumberland (see below). The papers cover the years from 1825 until 1891. During this period the heiress, later owner of this (entailed) estate was Marrianne Sarah, eldest daughter of Sir Thomas Haggestone [Haggerston]. In 1834 she married David, fourth son of Sir John Marjoribanks [Marchbank] of Lees; her husband then assumed the name of Robertson in compliance with the will of William Robertson of Ladykirk, maternal grandfather of Marianne Sarah. David Robertson became Lord Lieutenant of Berwickshire and sat as Liberal M.P. for the county from 1859 until 1873. In 1873 he was created Baron Marjoribanks [Marchbank]; on his death shortly afterwards the title became extinct. A daughter, Sarah, married Watson Askew of Pallinsburn in 1856.
