The Scottish History Society remains the leading publisher of manuscript sources relating to the history of Scotland. Founded in 1886, the Society has published over 170 volumes which form a collection illustrating the history of Scotland recorded by contemporary sources. The SHS was founded as a result of a suggestion in a letter of Lord Rosebery's published in the Scotsman. Rosebery went on to be the Society's first president and had a keen interest in Scottish history.
The society's publications cover all periods from the twelfth to the twentieth centuries and include a range of topics - social, economic, legal, political, constitutional, diplomatic, military and religious history, as well as farming, gardening and the good housekeeping. In addition to making available sources vital to the study and writing of Scottish history, most volumes have substantial introductions by the editors. The volumes are of value to professional historians and teachers of history, and anyone taking an interest in Scotland?s past. |
