history |
The Society for the Benefit of the Sons of the Clergy of the Church of Scotland was constituted on 10 May 1791 with the objects, originally expressed, 'to secure to the Sons of the Clergy effectual assistance and patronage to enable them to enter on professions suited to their situation and pursue them with advantage; to aid them with money in prosecution of their views in life when their circumstances require it and, whether money shall be necessary or not, to afford them the countenance and support of the Society'. The following year the Society obtained a Royal Charter of Incorporation. Although the leading objective was assistance for sons, the laws of the Society provided for benefits being extended to daughters when funds permitted. The Society also administered a fund created under a disposition and settlement of Robertson Chaplin of Coliston dated 29 September 1864. The Society for Sons and Daughters of Ministers of the Church of Scotland was constituted on 5 April 1859 under the title of the Society for the Benefit of Sons and Daughters of Ministers and Missionaries of the Free Church of Scotland. In 1909, on the union of the Free and United Presbyterian Churches, the word `Missionaries' was dropped from the title and in 1930 the word `Free' was also dropped. In 1934, under the Clergy Societies Scheme of that year, the two Societies were amalgamated and reconstituted under their present title. |
