history |
The Scottish Amateur Athletic Association was formed on 26 February 1883. The SAAA acts as the governing body of amateur athletics in Scotland and most local athletic clubs are affiliated to the SAAA. Until 1933 professional clubs were eligible to be affiliated to the SAAA and these included many of the professional football clubs. In 1933 the SAAA restricted membership to amateur bodies only. At its formation the SAAA attracted mainly clubs located in the east of Scotland, and a rival West of Scotland Amateur Athletic Association was formed in March 1883 which subsequently amalgamated with the SAAA in June 1884. The main responsibilities of the SAAA include the regulation of amateurism and recognition of amateur status of clubs and individuals, the supervision of athletics meetings and the recording of results, and the provision of athletics coaching and teaching. |
