Arrangement |
In the present listing, GD345/1-501 and 601-704, which are mainly titles, have followed an existing numbering. The rest of the collection has been referenced with entirely new piece numbers. Where papers were found disarranged, a superficial arrangement has been imposed.
Researchers should order by the reference number GD345 and the piece number. A selective index precedes the list. Plans are listed and referenced separately. At the end of this volume there is a list of records still preserved at Monymusk. |
Publication note |
Some of the 18th-century estate records have been published by the Scottish History Society in 'Selections from the Monymusk Papers' (1713-1755) and by the Third Spalding Club in 'Life and Labour on an Aberdeenshire Estate' 1735-50. |

Archival history |
The records of this family have been deposited on indefinite loan by Sir Archibald Grant of Monymusk and Jean, Lady Grant, with the concurrence of the Grant Trustees. They were previously stored in 45 deed boxes of varying sizes at the House of Monymusk.
Earlier guides to these records were the report of the Historical Manuscripts Commission (Series 8, 9th Report, Part II, pp.238-41), which described only a tiny handful of the records; a calendar of the titles compiled in the 1920s and kept in the library at the House of Monymusk; and a report, made by the Secretary of the National Register of Archives in 1961, of which the bulk of the records and lack of a reference system limited the usefulness. |
