history |
The Association for the Protection of Public Rights of Roadway in and around Edinburgh was formed in c 1845, later becoming the Scottish Rights of Way and Recreation Society. Its early history was associated with two key incidents, the legal case surrounding access across the Duke of Atholl's land at Glen Tilt in 1845, and the access dispute over Glen Doll / Jock's Road, owned by Duncan Macpherson, in the 1880s. The Society was less active in the early 20th century. Since then, it has been active in compiling a Catalogue of Rights of Way (aka CROW) and in campaigning for clear signposting. It changed its name to the Scottish Rights of Way and Access Society (ScotWays) in 2000, prior to The Land Reform (Scotland) Act 2003. |
