Description |
These papers relate for the most part to the family of Johnston of Sands (near Culross, Fife) from whom the late sheriff J.W. Johnston was descended, and the family of Blaw, with whom they intermarried in the early eighteenth century. Sheriff Johnston's father, the late Lord Sands (C.N. Johnston, K.C.), purchased a number of early writs of the fifteenth and sixteenth century relating to the Blaw family, which are now incorporated with the main collection. They can be recognised by lot numbers marked on the back in blue pencil or the endorsement "Phillips MSS." Apart from the fact that they were acquired at Dowell's saleroom, nothing has been ascertained about their provenance. They probably came from the collection of Sir Thomas Phillipps [Phillips] (1792-1872). The titles are concerned almost exclusively with properties in the parishes of Tulliallan and Culross and include a number of very interesting writs relating to the burgh of Culross and the feuing of the Culross abbey lands, some with fine impressions of the chapter seal. A complete inventory of those before 1560 will be found in the inventory infra. The presence in this section of two extraneous documents, a royal charter (no.3) of lands in Banffshire and Aberdeenshire, and a French royal warrant (no.10) is no doubt attributable to their inclusion in the lots purchased by Lord Sands. Apart from the normal family, legal and estate papers, there are a few documents relating to the municipal or local affairs of Culross. The correspondence is mainly of family interest, and the letters to General Fairfax and from Sir Walter Scott were probably acquired by purchase.
