This is just a selection; all the previous bundles contain similar accounts. Lady Penuel, an unmarried woman, living in Elgin and Lossiemouth, spent largely on pictures and prints, jewellery, travel, often to Edinburgh, and occasionally to London, and dress, as well as charitable causes, and the more mundane bills for repairs, fish, meat and other household provisions. Including: 1. 1821 Feb. 22 Account due to Romanes and Paterson, the Irish Tabbinet Shawl and Silk Warehouse, 49 New Buildings, North Bridge, Edinburgh, a bonnet and scarf, with white feathers.
2. 1822 Aug. 24 Account due to Robert Frazer and co. goldsmith, lapidaries and seal engravers, 5 Princes St., Edinburgh, for a pair of topaz bracelets, an amethyst and pearl cross, etc.
3. 1825-6 Account due to Seniors, Bruton St. [London], for a French blond cap trimmed with flowers, a handsome gold turban, a handsome black velvet reticule embroidered in steel, a handsome India wool shawl, a black watered gros de Naple bonnet trimmed Chantillon lace and plume of feathers, etc.
4. 1828 Nov. 3 Account due to Andrew Milroy, jeweller, North Bridge st., Edinburgh, for a richly chased silver mustard pot and engraving crest and double mottoes in a scroll, and some cutlery, including a pair of plated on steel grape scissors and two pairs of nutcrackers.
5-6, 10. 1833-5 Accounts due to Angus Macdonell, gilder, Elgin, for regilding frames and supplying a gilt frame and three frames for portrait drawings, and for regilding a frame for portrait of the hon. Colonel FW Grant. 7. 1833-4 Account due to Helen Anderson, Grant Lodge Elgin, for making a cherry coloured silk bonnet, a ruby velvet bonnet and mantle, etc.
8. 1834 Account due to James Begg, painter, Elgin, for painting two pedestals marble, bronzing two figures, painting staircase ceilings and walls and lobby in imitation of stone, etc.
9. 1834 Account due to Forsyth and Young, booksellers stationers and bookbinders, Elgin, for a painting, Holy Family, by Mr Allan, 10 gns.
11-12. 1836 Account due to Alexander Hill, bookseller, fancy stationer, print seller and colourman to the Scottish Academy of Painting, 50 Princes St., Edinburgh, for an old oil painting of grapes, a landscape in frame and a large chalk drawing by Rt. Gibb.
13. 1836 Aug.6 Account due to M Saunders, dress and corset maker to HRH Mademoiselle [?Louisa, daughter of Louis Philippe, second wife of Leopold I of Belgium], 1 Castle St., Edinburgh, for a bonnet and bonnet cap, etc. Printed heading shows a crowned lozenge with fleur de lis [for France] held by two rather weary angels.
14. 1836 Aug. 6. Account due to WB Mackenzie, 27 Prince's St., Edinburgh, for a sewed cap. Written on printed ad., listing items sold, starting with Shetland stockings, and suggesting that the aged and delicate should wear two pairs at once; gives directions on how to wash the stockings and how to order by post.
15-16. 1837-8 Accounts due to Alexander Dallas, coach builder, Elgin, for making a hoe and repairing the carriage., Printed heading shows three varying equipages in profile.
17. 1838 July 30 Account due to Peter Lawson and son, seedsmen and nurserymen to the Highland and Agricultural Society of Scotland, for a double red camellia, a double yellow china rose and a white one.
18., 1838 July 24 Printed advertisment for S Hunter, Staffordshire Glass and China Ware Rooms, 13-14 Inglis St. and 6 Theatre Lane, Inverness.
19. 1838 July 25. Account due to Peter Lawson, Golden Acres nursery, Edinburgh, for a rose semperflorens, a cactus speceosissima, etc.
20. [1841 postmark] Printed ad. for John Taylor, 55 George St., Edinburgh, to subscribers to the Association for the Promotion of the Fine Arts, that he is preparing gold and fancy wood frames for the beautiful engraving 'The Moment of Victory' now printing for the previous year's subscribers. With prices.
21-4. 1839-43 Accounts due to William S Ferguson, jeweller silversmith and engraver in general, Elgin, for various items of jewellery, repairing clocks, etc. Printed heading shows Elgin cathedral and its chapterhouse.
25. 1841 Nov. 27 Certificate stating that Lady P Grant is entitled to one share in disposal of the original painting, Opening of the Sixth Seal, by F Danby, ARA.
26. n.d. Printed list of books to be sold at reduced prices by Forsyth and Young, Elgin.
27. 1843 Sept. Receipt by Jonathan Stiven, artist, Elgin,. to Lady Penuel Grant, for £1 11s 6d, for painting a landscape.
28. n.d. Printed list of goods stocked by Brander and co., tea dealers, grocers, etc., in Elgin, including five kinds of tea, dried fruit, Seville and china oranges, nuts, spices, pickles and sauces, candles and soaps, etc.
29. 1841 Printed ad. for first part of a new edition of the works of the late John Kay, to be published in weekly parts price 1s each, by Hugh Paton, carver and gilder, Adam Sq., Edinburgh. Includes a list of the portraits. 12 pp. |
