Including: 1. 1619 February 22, Kirkwall Andrew Smyth, his brother, "John Buchanane and the maistres have left Kirkwall and gone over to duell in Sound .... James Baikie and William Craigie ar newlie cum from Zetland and we ar luiking for the money that they ar debtfull of ... my lord saw my bottis that they wer ancient & full of dayis and ane holl in the fute of them and he bade me caus mak ane pair bottis to myself bot I said thair was not ane cordiner in Kirkwall that could mak ane pair worth the wearing .... I luik for yow and all the rest about the first of May .... Thair is not four pypes of tobacco quhill ye send it heir, and I am afeard the bishop want befoir it cum, thairfoir ye most send it with the first occasioun". 7. 1639 July 7 John Graham of Balgowan: "as for weares, god be praisit, ther is gud appearance that all will be weill for all the armyes ar dissollit, and we heir that his majestie is to be in Dalkeith in ix or x of this instant". 20. 1647 November 23, Edinburgh Alexander Johnston: "I hav receavit ane letter fra your sone [Patrick] laittlie fra Dansisk (Danzig) giving me notice of his health prosperitie and good furnessing all his proceidingis in my effeiris". 22. 1649 September 14, Birsay Robert, Earl of Morton: "It grieves me extremlie that in thir types of dificultie yow and utheris who did profes in former tymes to be my freynds that nane of yow at this tyme hath taken notice of me, and alas of my self I am not able to resist sic ane strong partie as is heir against me, though it pleased God to keip me out of their handis, alwayis it is Godis blissing that we pairted without blood. Bott upoun thir conditiounes that I should convene the haill gentrie of Orkney on Tuysday nixt at the kirk of Harray be ten houris in the morning to sie ane letter direct from his majestie to the gentilmen of Orkney ...". |
