The collection comprises mainly of titles to lands, including the lands of Hartree, Culter, Kilbucho, Annieston, and Staine, and to the families of Brown of Hartree, Dickson of Hartree and Kilbucho, Menzies of Culterallers, and Muirhead of Persilands. The identification of the titles to lands is enhanced by an extensive collection of inventories of writs. There is also a substantial quantity of material concerning individual legal cases, both manuscript and printed, an interesting set of military commissions, and several manuscript notebooks containing notes on theology and philosophy as well as notes on sermons preached in various Edinburgh churches towards the end of the 17th century. |

The Dickson family were associated with the lands of Hartree from the early 17th century onwards, having been acquired from the Browns of Hartree, whose association with Hartree dates back to the early 15th century. |
