The Cathcarts of Genoch and Knockdolian were a cadet branch of the family of Cathcart of Carleton and Killochan, acquiring the lands of Genoch in Wigtownshire by purchase in 1618. The estate of Knockdolian in Ayrshire was acquired a century later, as a result of the marriage of the laird of Genoch with the eldest daughter of McCubbin of Knockdolian, who disponed his lands to his Cathcart grandson. The last Cathcart laird sold Genoch in 1841 and Knockdolian in 1871. |
